When accidents happen or damage to any wood instead of using wood putty I found that it was easier to use cynacralate glue or super glue and quick and easy hand made jointer. For instance, I have a gash in the corner of a desk top in a very visible spot.
I'll take a chisel and scoop out an elliptical shape and then grab a dowel and block it smooth and then do the opposite with the same kind of wood so the grain matches well for color. Then, I'll place a piece of sandpaper between the replacement wood and the desk surface with the cutting side of the paper working on the new piece not the desk. I'll draw the paper towards me as to bed the wood perfectly into place then super glue it in and your done.
This is usually faster than wood putty takes to do the same job and it will make the defect disappear to the untrained eye.
