Antique All Wooden Vice

I purchased this vice at an antique mall. It is all wood. It really is beautiful. What I was wondering is the age of this tool and what it was used for? Would it be general carpentry? The frame measures 24" x 11" and would probably extend 16". If you can give me any help please e-mail me at antiques@power-net.net. Thank you.

Tall Bench Vise
by: Anonymous

it is a tail vice that would be set into the end of a bench top so that the front blocks would be flush with the bench top. It can be used as a small vice or more importantly, the higher rear block can push on the end of a board forcing the board into a "dog" or stop that is placed into a hole drilled into the bench top, thereby pinching the board and holding it stationary on the bench top. this leaves the surface of the board unobstructed for planing.
